The Savarticus

I have managed to recreate a well-beloved recipe from a great local bar. It is a cheese bread recipe known as the Savarticus. I'm very happy with how it turned out :)

The Savarticus

Ingredients:

Bread
1 ¼ cup warm water (yeast temperature)
2 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon sea salt
3 to 3 ½ cups flour
1 ½ teaspoons active dry yeast
Butter
1/3 cup softened butter
½ tsp garlic powder
1 egg
1 Tablespoon water
Jalapenos to taste
Bacon to taste
Cheese to cover bread (approx. 1 1/2 – 2 cups)

Instructions For Bread:

Place the yeast and sugar in a large bowl and stir in the warm water until everything is dissolved. Add in the salt, then stir in as much flour as you can. You might not need the full amount, or you may need more. You are looking to create a soft, pliable dough that isn’t too sticky.

Knead on a lightly floured surface for 6-8 minutes, or until dough is smooth and elastic. Place the dough back in the bowl and cover with kitchen towel. Allow to rise for about an hour.

Plop the risen dough back out on counter top and divide in half. Roll each half into a rectangular shape about 10” by 8”. Roll up the rectangle starting with a long side. Pinch the ends of the loaf to seal and shape in a “log”.

Grease a pizza stone or baking sheet and place the loaves on it to rise for another 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and prepare an egg wash by beating one egg with one tablespoon of water.

Right before you pop the loaves into the oven, brush the tops wit the egg wash and make 4 diagonal slashes across the top using a serrated knife.

Bake 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool on wire racks before serving.

Instructions for Cheese Bread:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

Cut loaves in half the long way. Spread garlic butter on loaves. Add diced jalapeno and chopped cooked bacon. Sprinkle cheese on top.

Bake for 10 minutes or until cheese is melted. Slice and serve.

A 5-Star Meal and a College Student Budget

Well I've moved off campus and into an apartment this year. I can say that I definitely enjoy it a thousand times more. Between my Pharmacy school application and exams and figuring out if I'll make rent this month I've been having a great time. My roommates seem to think I put way too much effort into my food. Now I'll never turn down Ramen noodles or some good old Kraft Mac n' Cheese, but I do like making my own food. I'm considered the chef in the house because I make a meal from "scratch" meaning not frozen or out of a box, almost every night. I wouldn't consider my food chef quality but to each his own.

The meal tonight was Teriyaki chicken with broccoli and red pepper with some teriyaki noodles. I thought it was creative and delicious and very easy and depending on how much chicken and broccoli you buy you can get many meals out of these ingredients which is a plus for a broke college student.

Having A Good Idea, and Knowing Some of Your Moves Just Suck

This weekend was a blast. First I went and spent the weekend at her house. We bought a pint of Ben and Jerry's to work on our goal to try all of the flavors, as well as renting Get Him To the Greek. Fantastic movie for those of you who have not seen it.

Saturday, we took a trip to Ann Arbor to tailgate at the Michigan/Michigan State game. That was pretty amazing. Not only were all the fraternities and sororities partying, but the fan base that showed up was pretty amazing. We managed to find the Ben and Jerry's scoop shop while we were there, so that was awesome. Some of those fans are a little ridiculous. There is a difference between being a hard-core fan and just plain being an a**hole. Some people are just plain rude. It's an 'effin game for God's sake.

We also went to a great party, I went horseback riding that was pretty sweet. I had never ridden on an English saddle before, let alone groomed a horse. You learn something new everyday.

Sunday we managed to hit an apple farm. The apple cider and donuts were amazing. I bought a caramel apple, how I'm going to eat that with my braces is still to be determined, but it will happen. It was a blast. It's a little depressing that we didn't have time to make it through the corn maze. Alas, college homework is the bane of my existence. Having two papers to write, four poems to read, 150 pages from One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest is not something I'm looking forward to. I'm ready for this weekend to be done because next weekend is going to be just as amazing as this past weekend was.

Some of the random topics that came up this weekend, were how mini-fridge freezers are worthless. They either don't freeze anything or they freeze things so good that you have to thaw them for two weeks if you want to eat. Another thing, why don't they make it so you can fit a pint of Ben and Jerry's standing up in them. That seems pointless to me.

Football. If you have a player who has sucked for the past couple games, why let him play when you know you are going against a huge rival team. Because throwing an interception at the beginning of the game and overthrowing and missing on a touchdown would have him benched had I been the coach.

Taylor Swift. Sometimes I feel like she doesn't completely get the concept of English literature. Her famous song Love Story has a line in it: "Cause you were Romeo I was a Scarlett Letter and my daddy said stay away from Juliet" Now I'm glad that she read the classics, but being known a scarlett letter, isn't a good thing. That means that you are an adulteress, aka meaning you're married and sleeping with someone else. How is that even remotely what you want to be known as. It was just one of those things that annoys me every time I hear that song.

So here's my arbitrary thoughts of the day.

Getting Work Done and Pretending to Get Work Done

Dear Blank Please Blank

So the other day my friend introduced me to the site (above) Dear Blank Please Blank. And I just wanted to let her know that I greatly appreciate her giving me something else that will cause me to decide the Internet is more important than my Orgo or Psych homework.

Dear Blank Please Blank is my new obsession. It pulled me away from major Facebook and MLIA time. I blew 3 hours on that site. There are some pretty funny posts. My personal favorites are ones about Justin Beiber or people overusing popular fads. I agree with about 93.7% of the posts on there. If you are in need of a good laugh that is the perfect site to go on.

This site is one of the leading reasons for my procrastination. It's a good way to act like you are doing work when you're really not. Of course being a college student, I'm pretty good about finding everything that is good for wasting any possible study or homework time. I feel like everyone should go to this site.

There's my arbitrary thought of the day.

A Wild Time and A Flat Line

The past couple of weeks GR has been hosting ArtPrize, that is an amazing event and everyone should try to make it out. There are some pretty amazing pieces of art and artists that come from all over the world to present their work.

I was there last weekend and I'm a little depressed that I missed what happened by one day. There was Lady Gaga flash mob that occurred. For those who are not aware of what a flash mob is: A flash mob (or flashmob) is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and pointless act for a brief time, then quickly disperse. The term flash mob is generally applied only to gatherings organized via telecommunications, social media, or viral emails. This is something that would be fantastic to do as a senior prank or an impromptu. It takes a lot of planning and dedication for it to have an impact. This video (above) was posted showing a large group that go together and created a flash mob to Lady Gaga's song Bad Romance.

Being a fan of Lady Gaga, I thought it was a pretty amazing thing to be honest. There is a debate between people who like Lady Gaga and people who don't like her. I like her because she makes music that I like to dance to. End. Of. Story. Her fashion doesn't bother me and the essence of her music videos don't bother me either, because frankly a lot of artists music videos don't make any sense to me.

I was a little upset that I missed this happening, but the fact that it happened so close to home I thought was pretty sweet. Although I wonder if the participants would get in trouble if they were caught. I'm sure the police don't appreciate flash mobs popping up, especially with how busy it was with all the tourists in town to see ArtPrize. It would be interesting to know.

So that's my arbitrary thought for the day. Let me know what you think.
